Senior Tutor, GID

Dr John Stevens returns to the RCA as Senior Tutor for the GID programme in London, having graduated here in 1994. John brings a diverse range of academic interests and industry experience, holding a BSc in Molecular Biology from King's College, London, and a Master's in Industrial Design Engineering from the RCA / Imperial College, and a PhD from Cambridge University. He worked for twelve years in industry including five as Head of Design for a technology company, where he was creative director and manager of the 12-strong design/UX team, followed by three years as an independent design consultant working in interaction and branding.

John gained his PhD investigating the roles of design as a strategic resource for organisations, at Cambridge University’s Institute for Manufacturing. This was followed by three years as a Senior Lecturer at Northumbria University, where he led the MA in Multidisciplinary Design Innovation. John’s research work explores how design’s potential might be better understood among stakeholders in business – the leaders, managers and strategists, and specialists such as engineers and marketers.
